You can be a Telephone Service Provider
On December 31, 2009, AT&T, the world’s oldest telephone company, announced its intention to abandon the landline telephone business in America. “The business model for legacy phone services is in a death spiral,” AT&T said. “With an outdated product, falling revenues, and rising costs, the plain-old telephone service (POTS) business is unsustainable for the long run.”
AT&T said that with the rise of cell phones and Internet communications such as VoIP, less than 20 percent of Americans now rely exclusively on landlines for voice service and 25 percent have abandoned them altogether.
AT&T also indicated that at least 18 million households subscribe to VoIP services, and that cable companies will provide VoIP to more than 24 million subscribers by 2010.
AT&T has finally confirmed what we have been saying for years: that VoIP is the voice communications system of the future, and will ultimately replace landline phone service.
